At the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, Shakira stole the spotlight as she received the prestigious Video Vanguard Award. The Colombian musician, who has been captivating audiences since the age of 18, looked stunning in a dazzling, gold sequined mini dress paired with a coat.
Shakira’s outfit wasn’t the only thing turning heads; Her heartfelt acceptance speech quickly took over the internet too. Instead of solely focusing on her journey, the singer took a moment to express her gratitude to the people who have supported her. Credit was given to her creative partners and her record label, acknowledging their significant roles in her career.
“The amazing women who worked with me… not only smart, but always helped me push through challenges while wearing so many hats. You girls are amazing, thank you so much!” exclaimed Shakira. Family also received a special mention, with the musician giving thanks to her parents and her two children, Milan and Sasha, who were also there to support her. Directly speaking to them, she told them, “Thank you so much for cheering me up and for making me feel… that mama can do it all!”
Shakira also dedicated the award to her fans, who stood by her through thick and thin, and most recently, kept her motivated during her split from Gerard Piqué. The singer thanked all her followers for their unwavering support, calling them her “army”.

In addition to the award, Shakira also received nominations in four other categories at the VMAs, including Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration for “TQG” with Karol G, and Best Latin Song for her songs “TQG” and “Acróstico.”
