Following the success of the first season, news broke in March 2022 that the Sex and the City sequel, And Just Like That… had been given the green light for a second series. After months of anticipation, the release date has now been confirmed, with Season 2 set to hit screens in June.

An image posted on the official And Just Like That… Instagram account on  May  23 showed fan-favorite couple Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) and Harry Goldenblatt (Evan Handler), embracing and gazing into each other’s eyes, with the caption: ‘Hold on, lovers — just one more month. Season 2 of #AndJustLikeThat premieres June 22 on Max.’

The announcement comes after the first teaser for the upcoming installment was unveiled earlier this spring. Released on 27 April, the one-and-a-half minute taste of Season 2 centers around the original Sex and the City protagonist, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), and her loyal girlfriends, Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and the aforementioned Charlotte. While SATC devotees were disappointed at Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall)’s absence from the spin-off, the show has welcomed a host of new characters including Che Diaz (Sara Ramírez), Lisa Todd Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker) and Seema Patel (Sarita Choudhury).

In the teaser, we see Carrie and her gang continuing to navigate friendship, love and life in New York, while grappling with fresh challenges (like the trials and tribulations of teenage children) and new adventures. The teaser ends on a gripping cliffhanger, as Carrie’s voiceover states: ‘some things are better left in the past… but not everything’ – just as her divisive former fiancé from the original show, Aidan, shows up outside her Upper East Side brownstone.

The official And Just Like That… Instagram account has been teasing fans with glimpses into the upcoming installment, recently revealing that singer Sam Smith will be making a cameo.

An Instagram co-post shared by the And Just Like That… account and the English star was captioned, ‘Up to something unholy on set’, a nod to Smith’s hit song. The two images showed the non-binary, Grammy and Brit Award-winning singer-songwriter wearing sunglasses as they struck playful poses on set. Delighted fans have been voicing their excitement in the comments, writing: ‘I CANNOT HANDLE THIS’ and ‘Living for this’.

Fabulous fashion is naturally back on the cards for the new season. Jessica Parker has been spotted on set in a fuchsia Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini floral dress, a Gucci blazer and a Gigi Burris beret, bringing a dose of Parisian chic to the streets of Manhattan.

In another winning style moment, she was pictured on a balcony during filming, teaming a sequined shirt and a crisp pleated skirt with an unexpected accessory: an adorable kitten. It looks like Carrie will be welcoming a new feline friend in the upcoming season.

Deadline reported last summer that John Corbett, who played Aidan in the original show, would be reprising his role in Season 2. Social media was later set ablaze by images of Aidan and Carrie clinched in a dramatic embrace, illuminated by the lights of a Manhattan night

Carrie’s apparent reunion with Aidan ignited debate in the comments.

The show’s official Instagram account has also been shining a light on Carrie’s loyal girlfriends, Miranda and Charlotte. One image showed Charlotte visiting a gallery, stylishly dressed in a monochrome floral black coat with a pink collar peeking out from underneath. The photo is captioned, ‘Charlotte York-Goldenblatt in her element’ – a nod to the character’s former career as an art dealer.

Miranda, meanwhile, after dabbling with grey hair in Season 1, has gone back to her signature red locks. A carousel of images and a video clip of Nixon and Jessica Parker filming in New York showed Miranda in a cosy brown coat over a bold purple ensemble, while Carrie was dressed in a multi-layered look, with a cardigan and coat over – gasp – tracksuit bottoms and flats (albeit Gucci clogs, possibly a Birkenstock collaboration, as reported by Vogue).

Captioned, ‘Turning city sidewalks into catwalks this fine day’, the photo garnered approval from fans, with some noting, ‘Miranda already looking way more Miranda in this season’, and ‘Yayyy she’s back w/her red hair!’

Sex and the City devotees felt both excitement and trepidation on learning that the era-defining show – which commanded legions of fans in the late 90s and early Noughties – was set to be revived in the form of a sequel series. Set over a decade on from the last SATC film (which was largely panned by critics), And Just Like That… follows Carrie and her friends in a new era, with children, marital breakdowns, career pivots and identity crises to navigate.

The reboot was a major streaming success, becoming HBO Max (which has since been rebranded as simply ‘Max’)’s most-watched series ever at the time of its finale episode in February last year. Viewers were delighted to return to New York and the whirlwind lives of Carrie and her trusted girlfriends once more; and were introduced to new characters after creators responded to calls to incorporate more racial diversity and LGBTQIA+ representation into the franchise.

Season 1 swept fans back up in Carrie’s life at a dramatic crisis point for the character, as *spoiler alert*, her husband, John ‘Big’ Preston (Chris Noth), dies following a heart attack at the start of the series. Over the course of nine further episodes, viewers accompany Carrie as she learns to negotiate life in the wake of her grief, making fresh friendships and reaffirming old ones, taking on new career projects, and dipping her toe back into the dating pond.

Last we saw of Aidan (when he and Carrie shared an ill-judged kiss in Abu Dhabi in the second SATC film), he was married to someone else, following two break-ups with Carrie – and even a thwarted engagement – in the original show. As a key character from the franchise, fans were surprised that he didn’t appear in the first season of And Just Like That…, with King later explaining to Deadline: ‘It really just felt like this was a lot for Carrie… We wanted to get her through [Big’s death] and into the light… We wanted to get her out. [Aidan’s return] is a big storyline that everybody at home wrote that we had never intended.’ Now, however, the time is ripe for his long-awaited return.

Created by Darren Star, the original Sex and the City series was based on Candace Bushnell’s seminal The New York Observer column and subsequent book. And Just Like That…, meanwhile, is developed by Michael Patrick King (a writer, director and producer on the original show and films), with Parker, Davis and Nixon also among the co-executive producers.

As for bringing the show’s fabulous fashion aesthetic into a new chapter, Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago, who worked in the SATC costume department under the legendary Patricia Field, have been whipping up some outlandish creations as costume designers for the spin-off.
