The internet has been rife with speculations since ABC announced that the 2022 Academy Awards will have a host. While many names have been going around, circulating reports mainly pointed to Pete Davidson. However, according to Variety, the comedian will not be hosting the Oscars due to his close working relationship with competitor network NBC. Instead, viewers may see Selena Gomez take the stage of the event, which has been hostless for four years.

In a bid to engage a younger audience and still have a millennial host, the 29-year-old has been reportedly tapped to present the awards, but she will be doing so with her co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short. The three recently appeared in the Hulu comedy-mystery show Only Murders in the Building. Speaking about the possibility, Craig Erwich, Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment president, said, “I mean, they are an iconic trio. They have mass appeal. Everybody loves them. They’d be a dream. That said, there’s a lot of incredible talent we’re considering. We’re having ongoing conversations with Will [Packer] and the Academy about it.”

If confirmed, this will be the fourth time Father of the Bride actor Martin will host the anticipated show. Hosting the Oscars for the first time will also be remarkable for Gomez, who has had a busy and successful last couple of years with the launch of her beauty brand, a cooking show and a role in a Hulu series.

The pressure to select a great host is now on for the Academy, which put out a feeler from its Twitter account earlier this week. “Hypothetically, if we asked you who would you want to host the Oscars, and this is strictly hypothetical, who would it hypothetically be?” the tweet read. Responses came in thousands including celebrities volunteering themselves.
