Selena Gomez has decided to take a break from social media following a situation involving Hailey Bieber and Kylie Jenner. After a couple of days of heated social media conversations between fans and occasionally rude comments being thrown at all three of them, the singer went live on TikTok to discuss her decision before disabling her account.

“I’m very happy, I’m so blessed, I have the best friends, the best fans in the whole world, and I just couldn’t be happier. And I’m good. I love the way I am. I don’t care. I love who I am,” she said. “And yeah, I’m gonna be taking a second from social media, because this is a little silly. And I’m 30, I’m too old for this, so. But I love you guys so much! And I will see you guys sooner than later, I just… I’m just gonna just take a break from everything.”

Her recent Instagram caption also hinted at the fact that this break is not limited to just TikTok and Gomez is probably done with social media as a whole for now.

For the past week, fans had been speculating that Bieber and Jenner had intended to bully Gomez by mocking her eyebrows. Both had posted stories about their brows hours after Gomez revealed on TikTok that she over-laminated hers. Within minutes, users were calling the action “childish” and claiming that the two were “mean girls”. However, Jenner and Gomez later stated via TikTok comments that the speculations were completely unnecessary and false.

The situation seemed to only get worse when an old video of Bieber resurfaced where she was pretending to gag at Taylor Swift‘s name, one of Gomez’s closest friends. The video was captioned “THISS is real Hailey ‘Bieber’ mean girl // matona // A Bully.” Gomez responded to the video by saying “So sorry my best friend is and continues to be one of the best in the game.”

Speculations on social media can often get out of hand, especially when it comes to celebrities and their highly dedicated fans. This struggle is something that Gomez has talked about before. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Gomez mentioned that “They [people] write paragraphs that are so specific and mean. I would constantly be crying. I constantly had anxiety…I couldn’t do it anymore. It was a waste of my time.” While at the time she had cited TikTok as being less hostile it seems that now even that has become too much for her.
