Selena Gomez recently gave a rare comment on her situation after breaking up with fellow pop star Justin Bieber. Appearing on the Awards Chatter podcast by The Hollywood Reporter, the singer and actor opened up about a tough period in her life after the highly talked-about split.

Gomez shared that she had a lot of “soul-searching” and “learning” to do. “I was, you know, obviously going through a really tough breakup, and then I was left with the question of my career and where am I gonna go and what’s gonna happen?” she said, while going on to talk about her health issues that followed. “Then my medical stuff kind of kicked in—I was dealing with my lupus and I was dealing with some kidney problems. It was actually really hard,” she added.

But as luck would have it, she came out of it stronger and saw the bright side of the situation. “Being on the other side of it, I have to be honest; it’s actually been really good for me,” she confessed. “It allowed me to develop a character where I don’t tolerate any sort of nonsense or disrespect in any way, and I’m really proud of how I came out of it.”

“It was necessary for me to walk through those things, I had a lot of soul searching to do,” the 29-year-old said. “By all means, I don’t have life figured out, but I do know that during that time I was learning so much about myself.” Gomez concluded by adding, “I find my tolerance of any sort of discomfort, usually disrespect, or whatever, even just unnecessary stuff, it’s not taking over me anymore.”

Her latest comedy series, Only Murders in the Building has hit the record for the most-watched comedy premiere in the history of Hulu. It’s been renewed for a second season, which is scheduled to premiere on June 28, with Cara Delevingne, Amy Schumer, and Shirley MacLaine joining the cast.
