Like most of us at this time staying in our homes while waiting for a semblance of normalcy to return, celebrities are busy trying to find ways to stay positive in this new reality. As part of Instagram’s #TakeABreak IGTV series, Selena Gomez invited followers to join her on a tour of her home while showing glimpses into her new daily routine under lockdown in hopes it will inspire others to discover what will make them happy during this time. “I obviously know this is a hard time, and I just want to let everybody know who’s dealing with stuff that you’re not alone at all and we can get through this together,” she said.
Gomez has been quite active during this lockdown, posting about the activities that have helped her cope during the stress and uncertainty of quarantine, from experimenting in the kitchen and re-watching reruns to video-calling loved ones and adopting her new puppy, Daisy.
As a vocal advocate for using public platforms to speak about mental health—a cause Gomez holds close to her heart—she used this video taken during Mental Health Awareness Month to highlight the importance of prioritizing self-care every day and building a strong support system, especially considering the current circumstances. “I think right now, it is more important than ever to talk about mental health, which is a subject that is very personal to me,” she said. “So I’m asking you guys to take a break with me, and I’m going to show you some of the things that help me stay positive during this time and see if any of it resonates with you.”

Although Gomez recognizes there isn’t a one-size-fits-all way to manage mental health, she began the video by sharing a form of therapy that has personally helped her daily. “There isn’t really one easy way to get through all of this, or even just to kind of tackle mental health in general, but some of the things that help me is my DBT books [Dialectical Behavior Therapy],” explained Gomez. “And every single day, I’ll look at a worksheet or if there’s something I’ working on, internally, I’ll just kind of find a chapter that relates to me.”
Walking through her backyard to enter a temporary at-home recording studio, the multi-platinum singer gave fans a sneak peek into where the new magic is currently happening and even gave a brief instrumental live performance. “It’s okay not to do something every single day but when I’m feeling up for it and I’m feeling creative, this is my little area of creativeness. This is our makeshift studio. This is how basically I write or work on music that needs to be worked on.”
Gomez ended the tour with the simple ways she likes to calm her mind and relax in the evening before heading to sleep—Hint: It involves creating a little zen corner on her nightstand. “The last part of my routine is my unwinding process,” she said. “So I usually take a walk at night because I can get rid of the day a bit. And then I come home, take a shower, wash my face, and then when I get into bed, my friends laugh at me, but I have a heating pad. It’s almost like an anxiety blanket. It feels really nice. I will sometimes journal. And I have these beautiful little like, face sprays, rosewater, a candle to help me as well. And then I have my little Daisy, and we just kind of get into bed. I turn off all my electronics and I just relax.”
