#SaudiWomenDriving: The Best Social Media Reactions

Last September, Saudi Arabia‘s King Salman issued a historic royal decree, lifting the decades-long ban on female drivers and allowing women in the Kingdom to get behind the wheel. And, as of Sunday, women are legally allowed to drive in the county for the first time since 1957, revving up their engines the second that the clock struck midnight. The lifting of the ban is part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman‘s Vision 2030 plan, which focuses on modernizing Saudi Arabia and diversifying the economy away from oil. In honor of the landmark day, women in Saudi Arabia and across the world have taken to social media to celebrate the momentous occasion with must-click hashtags, including #SaudiWomenDriving, and on-point images of themselves behind the wheel.

Scroll through our favorite online celebrations so far, from an illustration by Saudi Arabian artist Tagreed AlBagshi and videos of women driving in the Kingdom for the first time, to images of traffic police officers handing female drivers roses. Read the full details on the breaking news here.
