The name of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas‘ baby has been revealed via reports, three months after they welcomed their daughter via surrogacy. According to the birth certificate seen by TMZ, the couple has named their daughter Malti Marie Chopra Jonas. The document also revealed that she was born on January 15, just after 8pm, in San Diego, California.
While the couple has yet to officially announce the name and why they picked it, it’s clear that the name has Indian origins, as a nod to Chopra’s heritage. In the traditional Sanskrit language, Malti means ‘fragrant flower’, or ‘moonlight’, and combined with her middle name, seems to stand for luminosity. Marie is derived from the Latin term ‘stella maris’, which means ‘star of the sea’, and also has a Biblical history with it being the French name for Jesus’ mother, Mary.

Having kept the surrogacy process private, Chopra and Jonas announced the birth of their baby via Instagram on January 22. “We are overjoyed to confirm that we have welcomed a baby via surrogate,” their posts read. “We respectfully ask for privacy during this special time as we focus on our family. Thank you so much.” Since then, the Quantico star has also opened up about motherhood in a conversation with comedian Lilly Singh about her new book Be a Triangle: How I Went from Being Lost to Getting My Life. “As a new parent right now, I keep thinking about that I will never be imposing my desires, fears, my upbringing on to my child,” she had said. “I have always believed that children come through you, not from you. There is no belief like, ‘This is my child and I will shape everything.’ They come through you to find and build their own life. Recognizing that really helped me… my parents were very non-judgemental in a certain way.”
