Reportedly inspired by Meghan Markle’s experience of growing up biracial in Los Angeles, a new series by the Sussex’s is being actively pitched to streaming services and networks. Hoping to bring their idea to life, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are in talks with production companies across Hollywood to produce a show centered around female empowerment and racial inequality.
Speaking to British publication The Mirror, a source said “They have suggested a series focusing on the empowerment of women and young girls in today’s world.” “It will home in on race issues, something Meghan has always been passionate about. It’s got quite a political stance and will also draw on feminism.”
Having moved to Los Angeles earlier in the year, and after settling into their permanent home in Santa Barbara more recently, the new series acts as another step in fortifying Markle and Prince Harry’s connection to America, in both a professional and personal context. While the series will be inspired by Markle’s personal experiences, the insider confirmed it will not be about her or Prince Harry directly. “They want the series to continue their vision of empowerment for young people,” the source explained, clarifying that Prince Harry and Markle “will appear in it but it’s about ‘normal’ people, not them.”
While the network or streaming service upon which the series will be available is yet to be determined, The Mirror confirmed that NBC was one of the first to hear the pitch. Speaking to American publication Us Weekly earlier in the month, another source confirmed that both the Duke and Duchess of Sussez are determined to “make it in Hollywood.” While Markle has her sights set on creative pursuits, Prince Harry is said to be focusing on “making documentaries connected to good causes — not just on the production side of things.” Noting their inclination to immerse themselves in the industry, the source continued, “Working in the entertainment industry isn’t something [Harry] particularly thought about doing as royal, but since separating from the royals, he now has the opportunity to explore new, exciting opportunities and can’t wait to get his upcoming projects off the ground.”
