It’s not long until Prince Harry‘s tell-all memoir, Spare, hits the shelves worldwide, and details from early released copies in Spain are already making headlines. Excerpts from the autobiography show that the British royal has also touched upon his wife Meghan Markle‘s relationship with sister-in-law Kate Middleton, now Princess of Wales. This includes their infamous conversation just four days before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding, which is said to have made Markle cry.

According to Page Six, Prince Harry writes that Middleton had an issue with her daughter Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress, and texted Markle about it. The “French haute couture dresses” had been “hand-sewn based solely on [the bridesmaids’] measurements,” says Prince Harry of the pieces which were custom-made by Givenchy’s then-creative director Clare Waight Keller, who also designed Markle’s wedding gown. When Markle responded to Middleton, asking her to bring Charlotte to the palace where a tailor was waiting to perform alterations for all bridesmaids, this was “not sufficient” for the Princess of Wales, according to Prince Harry. Allegedly stating that Charlotte’s dress was “too big, long and baggy,” and that she “burst into tears when she tried it on,” Middleton said that all the bridesmaid dresses needed to be completely remade; with four days to go until the wedding. Reportedly, Prince Harry writes that while she eventually visited the tailor with Charlotte, he later found Markle in tears “on the floor” after the “altercation.” Middleton apologized a day later and brought over flowers and a card, according to Prince Harry.

Prince Harry also recalls an “awkward moment” between the two women, which allegedly took place at their first joint royal event at the Royal Foundation forum in February 2018. Markle asked to borrow Middleton’s lip gloss having forgotten her own—an “American thing,” describes Prince Harry. “Kate, taken aback, went into her handbag and reluctantly pulled out a small tube,” he continues. “Meg squeezed some onto her finger and applied it to her lips. Kate grimaced.” While he believes that the four “should’ve been able to laugh about” the moments, the press “sensed [it was] something bigger.” He writes that Middleton may have been “on edge,” as she was now “going to be compared to, and forced to compete with, Meg.”

Multiple outlets are said to have reached out to Buckingham Palace for a response, which has “refused to comment.”
