Arab Films The Last Men in Aleppo and The Insult Make History With Oscar Nominations

“The Insult”, 2017.

The 2018 Oscar’s nominations are officially in. What’s more exciting is that two Arab-directed films have received an Oscar nod. On Tuesday morning, the nominees for the annual 90th Academy Awards were announced by actors Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, and they include The Last Men in Aleppo and The Insult, which were nominated for The Best Documentary Film and The Best Foreign Film, respectively.

It’s the first time in history that a Lebanese film has been nominated for an Academy Award. Ziad Doueri’s The Insult is up against films from Chile, Russia, Hungary, and Sweden in the Foreign Language Film category. The acclaimed courtroom thriller, which stars Adel Karam, Kamel El Basha, and Camille Salameh also picked up the Best Actor award at the 2017 Venice Film Festival. It’s the 14th film to be submitted to the Oscars by Lebanon since 1978, and the first to actually make the cut.

Meanwhile, the Feras Fayyad-directed The Last Men in Aleppo, which documents the story of the White Helmets volunteer group’s heroic efforts in the war-torn Syria, also made Oscar history by becoming the first Syrian film to be nominated for an Academy Award. The rousing 90-minute documentary is up against other nominees for best documentary feature including Abacus: Small Enough To Jail, Face Places, Icarus, and Strong Island. The documentary scooped up the Grand Jury Prize in Sundance’s world documentary competition.

Comedian Jimmy Fallon is back as the host of this year’s ceremony, which is set to broadcast on Sunday, March 4.
