During a short trip to Jordan, Oprah Winfrey visited the ancient city of Petra with her longtime friend Gayle King this week. The American media mogul and internationally recognized TV host certainly enjoyed her time in the ‘Rose City’, prompting her followers on Instagram to put the country on their “must-see list”.

Petra is undoubtedly a breathtaking destination. Located in southern Jordan, the Unesco World Heritage Site is known for its remarkable architecture and is considered one of the oldest cities in the world. Carved out of rose-colored sandstone cliffs, this city served as the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom. The stunning structures including tombs, temples, and amphitheaters accessed through the city’s narrow passageways are prime examples of eastern traditions and Hellenistic architecture merging in perfect harmony.

Petra’s most famous feature is the Treasury, an elaborately decorated temple carved directly into the rock face. The first photo on Winfrey’s post shows her in front of the iconic landmark enjoying a camel ride.  Other stops on Winfrey’s tour included Bethany Beyond the Jordan, “the spot where the big boulder comes rolling out of Indiana Jones” and of course, a traditional majlis in the expansive red sands of Jordan. Both she and King were spotted supporting the farwa, a traditional bedouin garment used to survive in the cold. King also shared some photos from the trip giving us more insight into what the two television personalities got up to in Jordan.
