The Misk Art Institute, founded by HH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and headed by Saudi interdisciplinary artist Ahmed Mater is set to inaugurate the first edition of its art festival, Misk Art 2018, in Riyadh today. The week-long event, which will conclude on November 3, will feature panel discussions, exhibitions, and interactive workshops in Durrat Arriyadh. The festival was created for art aficionados, novice collectors, up-and-coming artists, and established creatives to “to immerse themselves in the space between the traditional and the contemporary, to learn from the wisdom of experience, and share the energy of discovery with professionals and the community of visitors,” per the official press statement.

The five-day art festival is a must-visit for those hoping to explore captivating works across various disciplines, such as photography, sculpture, street art, performances, installations, and music. There will also be an entire exhibition dedicated to The Institute of Art Education for Teachers in Riyadh. Exhibit 23 will present the works of 23 former students who graduated from the institute in the past 25 years, with the aim of spotlighting the major influence the school has had on the history of art education in the Kingdom.

In addition to the exhibition, The Misk International Sculpture Symposium, which was curated by Saudi artist Ali Al-Tokhais, brings together 21 professional sculptors from over 10 countries in Riyadh to dream up original art pieces carved out of locally sourced marble blocks during a three-week period.

Meanwhile, the Jeddah-based Athr Gallery has curated a contemporary art fair that will run in conjunction with Misk Art 2018, showcasing eight leading showrooms in the Kingdom. There will also be other sections dedicated to Arabic calligraphy, a space for individual artists and cultural institutions to showcase their work (The Art Street), as well as an exhibition curated by Abdulsalam Alamri and Kholood Albakr and organized by Riyadh’s Phonart, entitled “Every Possible Angle”.

Misk Art 2018 kicks off from October 30 – November 3 in Durrat Arriyadh. For more information visit miskartinstitute.org.
