We Might Be Getting a Female Muslim Superhero

Ms. Marvel, a Muslim superhero, is in “MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe] plans” says Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president. “Ms. Marvel, which is another character in the comic books, the Muslim hero who is inspired by Captain Marvel, is definitely sort of in the works. We have plans for that once we’ve introduced Captain Marvel to the world,” he told BBC in an interview.

Kamala Khan is the daughter of Pakistani immigrants, who hails from New Jersey. She adopts the alter-ego Ms. Marvel in honor of Captain Marvel, who will be played by Brie Larson in her own standalone film set to premiere in March 2019. Her creator, G. Willow Wilson, is also a Muslim woman, ensuring that fans get an accurate portrayal of what it means to be a Muslim female in America.

Making her comic book series debut in 2014, Ms. Marvel’s story arc revolves around coming of age, dealing with society, her culture, parents, and maintaining her Muslim identity, all while balancing her shape-shifting super powers. One scene in the comic books portrays the teenage superhero visiting the head of the local mosque, who helps her embrace her polymorphic abilities.

The inclusion of a Muslim superhero into the Marvel universe alongside Captain America, The Hulk, Thor, and co. is a long overdue and necessary step towards equal representation. A more diverse MCU is important to young Muslim girls, who will finally be able to see themselves in a superhero that they can relate to.

As for when, or if, Ms. Marvel gets her own movie, it’s likely that we’ll have to wait. Marvel Studios has its hands full at the moment with Ant-Man and the Wasp due this summer, and Captain Marvel, which leads to the sequel of Avengers: Infinity War. In addition, there is a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and a third The Guardians of the Galaxy movie in the works.

Ms. Marvel joins other mainstream Muslim superheros, including DC Comics’ The Green Lantern (Lebanese-American) and Nightrunner (Algerian-French).
