Madonna Celebrates 60th Birthday in Morocco

Madonna is 60 today. The pop icon decided to celebrate her birthday week in style wearing traditional Amazigh attire while on holiday in Marrakesh, Morocco. The musical legend shared a series of Selfies on her Instagram page of herself sporting a striking headdress worn over her signature, platinum, plaited waves. She paired the weighty headpiece with decorative silver chains, baubles, and clinky, beads in red worn around her neck, which are typically worn by the indigenous people of North Africa. “Almost Birthday Selfie- 🎂🎉💕🌈🍾💃🏾. Celebrating Berber. Culture! 🇲🇦♥️” she captioned one of the images.

During her North African vacation, the singer also paid a visit to the city’s winding Medina during the call to prayer on the eve of her big day. “Walking thru the Labyrinth of the Medina during the Call to Prayer,” the American singer wrote on her Instagram account.

Starting the celebrations early (she is a Leo after all,) the award-winning artist shared a pre-birthday Selfie wearing a red Moroccan Fez, decorated with Amazigh jewelry alongside a caption that read “Today I am wearing C A K E on my head!”

Though there are few details on how the newly-minted 60-year-old will be spending her big day, to mark the occasion, Madonna launched a US $60,000 Malawi fundraiser to support her work with children in Malawi. The singer, who adopted four Malawian children, wrote “For my birthday, I can think of no better gift than connecting my global family with this beautiful country and the children who need our help most.”

The Like a Prayer singer established the non-profit entitled Raising Malawi in 2006 to provide health and education programs, particularly for Malawian girls. She raised more than US $10,000 in the first 24 hours since launching the fundraiser.
