He was beloved for his turns in films such as Lawrence of Arabia, To Commit a Murder, and Trapeze, and now his legacy is being remember by his legion of fans. Legendary Egyptian-French actor Gamil Ratib passed away this week at the age of 91, his agent revealed on Wednesday.

The actor, who was born in 1926 in Cairo, enjoyed a 65-year-long career that saw him star in myriad films, TV shows, and on stage. Most famously, Ratib played Majid in 1962 epic historical drama Lawrence of Arabia alongside Peter O’Toole and Alec Guinness. The award-winning actor – who has received France’s prestigious Legion of Honour – studied theatre at the University of France, before making his film debut in the 1940s. His last credited role was in 2018’s Hier, a Hungarian drama that follows an engineering company owner to a site in North Africa.

As news of his death was announced, many stars of the Arab world took to social media to remember Ratib, for whom a funeral will be held in Cairo. Among those paying homage to the late actor was Hend Sabri, who had the “privilege” of working with Ratib on 2008 Egyptian drama The Aquarium.  The actress described the star as a “rare artist who defied borders”. Nancy Ajram, Zeina, and Asser Yassin were also among those paying their respects on Twitter. Here, we round up some of the most touching messages shared in Ratib’s honor.
