She may not have walked away with a trophy earlier this year, but second time could be a charm for SZA. The American singer-songwriter has been nominated for the 2019 Grammy Awards, garnering nods in the Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Rap-Sung Performance categories for All The Stars, a duet with rapper Kendrick Lamar.
The 28-year-old Muslim artist, born Solána Imani Rowe, was last year nominated for Best New Artist, Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song at the annual music ceremony. While she might not have won on tthathe night, the star certainly did this week, taking home the Rulebreaker Award at the 2018 Billboard Women In Music event on Thursday. “When I was younger, I envisioned a rule breaker to be like, some very brave, triumphant, happy, joyful person who’s actively choosing to go against the grain,” she said in her acceptance speech, according to Billboard. “And I always felt like, ‘I’m barely making it with my life.’ But, I guess, as long as you end up here, like, this is the explosion. So, it doesn’t matter how you feel on the way, even if you feel crazy or wack or not worthy.”
SZA is joined in the Grammy running by stars such as H.E.R – who is up for best new artist, best R&B performance, best R&B song, best R&B album, and best new artist – as well as Donald Glover AKA Childish Gambino, Janelle Monae, and Ariana Grande. Lady Gaga also scored a nod for “Shallow”, a track from her turn in A Star Is Born, which is up for record of the year and song of the year at the February 10 ceremony. The pop-star-turned-actor was also nominated a day earlier in the Best Actress category for the 2019 Golden Globes, which will be held on January 6.
