In the lead-up to her wedding day, the family of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex was fraught with tension. Her father, Thomas Markle, pulled out of attending the nuptials, citing ill health after he was revealed to have staged paparazzi photos of himself. Then, the royal’s half-sister, Samantha Markle, made repeated slurs towards her sibling in the media, telling the duchess to “act like a humanitarian” and pay tribute to their father.

However, after months of speaking out, it appears Samantha is willing to put the feud to bed. The 53-year-old appeared on the Jeremy Vine show in the UK this week, and issued a public apology to her royal half-sister. “I think everybody was hurt not being included or invited to the wedding, but I felt as though it could have all been nipped in the bud had everyone been included, and we all just agreed to move forward with positive resolve,” she told the TV host. “The hurt feelings wouldn’t have snowballed, but believe it or not, it doesn’t mean that we love you any less, I just think that families can be this way when there’s confusion and people are hurt.”

Samantha had hoped to meet with the duchess during her visit to the UK, but admitted after turning up a Buckingham Palace, a tête-à-tête had not eventuated. However, when asked what she would have said to the royal, Samantha revealed “there is so much water under the bridge”. “So much has spun out of control that was never intended to,” she added. “Moving forward, I apologize and wish things could be different.” Meghan has maintained a dignified silence since the ongoing rift unfolded, though leant on her husband’s family throughout.

The newlywed a “a pillar of support” in Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Vanity Fair reports, with Prince William‘s wife helping Meghan steer her way through her new role as a member of the Royal Family. “Kate’s well aware of what Meghan is going through. Her family has been dragged through the tabloids and she knows it’s not nice. She’s made a big effort to be kind to Meghan and look out for her,” a source told the publication. “Kate’s made a real effort to be kind to Meghan and to include her. They’re quite different characters but they get along well.”
