Priyanka Chopra Hopes She’s “Cracked the Door Open” for Women of Color

When she was cast in Quantico, Priyanka Chopra became the first South Asian actor to headline an American network drama series. And now, three years after the thriller first hit screens, the Bollywood icon is bidding farewell to her character, Alex Parrish. The 36-year-old former Miss World winner has wrapped up her work on the US series, which was canceled this year after three seasons. The show’s final episode aired in the US on August 3, and Chopra penned a poignant message to her 25 million Instagram followers as she marked the end of her role.

“As you’ll see, her story will come full circle…and that is the best feeling as an actor,” the Jamshedpur-born star captioned an image of a Quantico billboard. “Bringing Alex to life has challenged me physically and emotionally, but even more significant it has (I hope) cracked the door open for female talent and women of color to play leading ladies. Thank you for opening your homes and hearts to me every week!” Chopra, who has won two People’s Choice Awards for her portrayal of the FBI agent, also thanked the show’s cast and crew “for being such an amazing team to work with”. “Thank you for all the memories that I will cherish… memories of laughter, of learning new things, of making friends for life. It was a pleasure working with each and every one of you, and I look forward to crossing paths again!” Chopra, who was crowned Miss World in 2000, made her Bollywood film debut in 2003, and her Hollywood live-action film debut in 2017’s Baywatch.

However, as one doors closes, another opens, with Chopra reportedly set to appear in an upcoming Hollywood blockbuster. The star is in talks to play the lead female role in Cowboy Ninja Viking opposite Chris Pratt, Entertainment Weekly reported last month. And the star’s personal life has also undergone exciting new changes, with Chopra set to wed American singer Nick Jonas, according to multiple reports. The engagement is believed to have taken place in July, as Chopra and her 25-year-old beau holidayed in London. Jonas, who rose to fame as part of pop rock band the Jonas Brothers, popped the question on the Bollywood icon’s birthday on July 18, the BBC reports. The couple is yet to publicly confirm the happy news, however a source told People magazine that Jonas proposed with a ring from Tiffany & Co. “They are so happy,” the source added. “His friends and family have never seen him like this, and they’re all really excited for him. He’s definitely very serious about her.”

The engagement was also alluded to by director Ali Abbas Zafar, who hinted at Chopra’s news as he revealed the actor would no longer be starring in his film Bharat. “The reason is very, very special, she told us in the Nick of time about her decision and we are very happy for her,” Zafar tweeted in a cryptic message. Jonas and Chopra were first pictured together May 2017, when they attended New York’s Met Gala together as friends. “We were both wearing Ralph Lauren! And we decided to go together because it was fun,” Chopra told Jimmy Kimmel shortly afterwards. “Yeah we were on the same table. We know each other so we were like, ‘Hey you know what, let’s go together.’ And I was like, ‘Okay. Let’s go together!’ It just ended up working out.”
