Today marks a year since a huge stockpile of ammonium nitrate led to a pulverizing port explosion in Lebanon‘s capital, decimating a population already struck by Covid-19. According to Human Rights Watch, 218 of at least 14 nationalities lost their lives to the blast, which further rendered half of Beirut’s healthcare centers nonfunctional, and impacted 56% of the private businesses in Beirut, crumbling infrastructure including schools, offices, and places of worship. Among the most violent explosions in history, it mutilated over 7,000 people and displaced more than 300,000, apart from releasing harmful chemicals into the air and soil, irreversibly damaging both the health of the city’s inhabitants and its natural environment. Now, left beneath the piles of rubble that are slowly being picked up and stacked again, is an enduring economic crisis, crippling poverty, and permanent mental and physical scars on survivors.
In remembrance of lost homes, loved ones, and survivors, Lebanese stars and designers have taken to social media to honor the hope, strength, and resilience of Beirut.
