Lady Gaga has been photographed as Harley Quinn on set for the very first time, and if these snaps of her in character are anything to go by, the singer-actor will not disappoint in the forthcoming Joker: Folie à Deux film. She will be acting alongside Joaquin Phoenix, who won the Oscar for best actor for playing Arthur Fleck (aka the Joker) in the 2019 film, The Joker.

In the shots, Lady Gaga is wearing pared-back clown make-up (that is, pared back for a clown) with traditional center-lines down both eyes, a pale but luminous complexion and red lipstick.

She wears ripped black tights and a black and white corset, both with the traditional diamond ‘jester’ pattern, and a punk style black leather miniskirt with matching black heeled boots. A fitted jacket with dramatic lapels and cuffs completes the look, in a dramatic red shade that matches her lips.

Her hair is worn in an unbrushed style, and bleach-blonde with visible roots – much like a teaser image from filming which director Todd Phillips shared back in February.

In character, she is surrounded by police officers (although uncuffed), which may well give us a clue that the character may face trouble with the law for her rebellious behavior in the film’s action…

While little is known about the plot of the film itself, it is rumored that it is to be a musical according to Polygon – which would make the casting of Lady Gaga – whose rendition of the song ‘Shallow’ in 2018’s A Star Is Born won an Oscar – a genius choice.

Previously, the DC Comics character’s live-action film incarnation has been played by Margot Robbie, who has become synonymous with depicting Harley in the films Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey.

But last year it was announced that, Lady Gaga would be stepping into her shoes (well, heeled boots) to play the comic book hero in the long-awaited sequel to the 2019 Joker film. Harley, who is the titular character’s side kick and love interest, will be a central character in the film.

And who else better to play her than Lady Gaga, whose acting credentials have long been established in her successive lead parts across both TV – in American Horror Story: Hotel, for which she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie) – and film, in 2018’s A Star is Born (for which she was nominated for best actress) and 2021‘s House of Gucci. We can’t wait to see her in her latest starring role – although it may have to involve some delayed gratification, as the film isn’t out until next autumn.
