In a recent episode of the On Purpose With Jay Shetty podcast Kim Kardashian shows a rare vulnerable side of herself as she opened up about her experience of motherhood.

As a working single mother of four kids – daughters North, 9, and Chicago, 5, and sons Saint, 7, and Psalm, 4 – there have certainly been challenges for the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star. “I’m trying to make everyone happy, I’m doing all this stuff for everyone else but myself,” she commented at the beginning, giving us insight into how hard it can be to meet the needs of your children while also taking care of yourself. However, the 42-year-old is quick to realize that sometimes you have to step back and focus on yourself for everyone to be even happier.

There may be quiet moments devoted to herself such as early morning workouts or late night TV after all the kids have been tucked away into their beds but on most days it can get a little chaotic.“When you’re in it — especially when they’re babies and you’re feeding and there’s madness going on — it’s, like, full madness. It’s the best chaos, though.” She is clear on the fact that she loves motherhood but also acknowledges that “there are nights where I cry myself to sleep.”

While motherhood has certainly been challenging, especially in the wake of her divorce with Ye (formerly Kanye West), it has also taught the Skims founder a lot about herself. “If a tantrum comes in — oh, my God. Your life is completely upside down. But it teaches you so much more about yourself than I think any parent could have ever anticipated.”

While most of these struggles are faced by parents all around the world, for Kardashian there are also certain issues that come with fame. The high level of public interest in her family means that no matter how hard she tries to give her children a normal childhood they will be followed around by cameras and paparazzi. This, as a matter of fact, is why she appreciates Japan, where people maintain their distance even if they recognize her. “Listen, I love my life. I love everything that comes along with it. I’m not complaining. But a little glimpse of that especially for the little ones is so good.”
