Kate Middleton has returned to her royal duties after completing preventative chemotherapy treatment for cancer, attending an Early Years Meeting at Windsor Castle, marking her first official engagement since her health battle. The 42-year-old royal is deeply committed to the Early Years initiative, which she has described as “her life’s work.”
The Princess of Wales‘ involvement in royal duties had been limited since March, when she publicly announced her cancer diagnosis. On September 9, Kate announced via a social media video message that she had finished her chemotherapy treatment, closing an incredibly difficult chapter in her and her family’s lives. The video was shot at her family’s country home, Anmer Hall. “As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment,” she said.
While undergoing treatment, Kate continued to stay informed about her work, particularly her early childhood initiative. According to the Royal Family’s official website, her study looks at how early experiences might be the cause of several of society’s most important problems, such as addiction, family dissolution, mental health difficulties, and homelessness.
The princess only attended two public events throughout her illness, Wimbledon in July and Trooping the Colour in mid-June. However, with her health now improving, her future public schedule remains uncertain. The only confirmed event she is possibly expected to attend is the Remembrance Sunday service on November 10, where she will join the Royal Family in honoring veterans and their families. She is also expected to host her annual carol concert at Westminster Abbey in December.
In her video message, the royal spoke openly about the impact her illness had on her family, “Life as you know it can change in an instant, and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown,” she said. She added that her cancer journey had been “complex, scary, and unpredictable,” and had given her a new perspective on life.
