Last night’s 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards saw Jennifer Lopez take home the Generation Award in recognition of her many film and television achievements, and the Best Song Award for ‘On My Way’. Accepting the first award, which according to a release, “celebrates beloved actors whose diverse contributions to both film and television have turned them into household names,” the singer and actor went on to deliver a heartfelt speech expressing her gratitude.
Lopez referred to the clip of her best films played at the Awards, and said, “As an actor, I’m not any of the women that I’ve played but there’s a part that is deeply true to me in each of those characters. Since you cannot create truth unless you’ve really lived it, I have a different kind of list of ‘thank yous’ tonight.” Sharing that the setbacks and disappointments in her life are what made her strong, she added, “I want to thank all the people who gave me this life. I want to thank the people who gave me joy and the ones who broke my heart. The ones who were true and the ones who lied to me. I want to thank true love and I want to thank the way that I lied to myself because that’s how I knew that I had to grow.” She added, “I want to thank all the people who told me to my face or when I wasn’t in the room that I couldn’t do this. I really don’t think I could have done it without you! And I know I couldn’t have done it without the fans.”

Moved to tears, Lopez went on to thank “disappointment and failure for teaching me to be strong,” and her twin children, 14-year-old Max and Emme for “teaching me to love.” Before leaving the stage, Lopez made sure to give a special shout-out to actor Ben Affleck, with whom she recently rekindled her relationship and is now engaged once again. “Ben and everybody at home, wait for me to have dinner. I will be home by 7!” she said in her message.
