If there’s any series that’s going to change the TV landscape this autumn, it’s Apple TV+’s The Morning Show – starring America’s sweethearts Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, who famously worked together before on Friends as Rachel and her bratty younger sister Jill. The overall premise of the forthcoming drama: Alex Levy (Aniston) and Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) have hosted the fictional equivalent of Good Morning, America together for years – until he’s suddenly dismissed in the wake of a harassment scandal post Me Too.
As the station attempts to prevent a massive dip in ratings, a cut-throat executive (Billy Crudup) pits a fiery local news host Bradley Jackson (Witherspoon) against Alex – leading to plenty of sparring both on and off camera. As he chillingly says, “Watching a beloved woman’s breakdown is timeless American entertainment.” Rounding out the cast as fellow network employees are Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Duplass, and Bel Powley.
Witherspoon and Aniston are both executive producers on the series, with Mimi Leder directing. At an Apple event this spring, the Big Little Lies star described the series as “a high-velocity thrill ride in which we pose questions without easy answers”, with Aniston chiming in to say that The Morning Show will “take an honest look at relationships between women and men in the workplace” through the “prism of those under-slept and over-adrenalined people behind and in front of the camera”. The hotly tipped drama will premiere at the end of 2019.
