This is How Instagram Wants You to Do More Good this Ramadan

Adding to the festivities of the Holy Month, social networking app Instagram has launched its first ever Ramadan campaign – #MonthofGood, as well as a new camera filter.

The campaign which will run throughout Ramadan aims to encourage the celebration of the Holy Month by allowing users to share their acts of kindness with the hashtag. While “acts of kindness” cannot be defined, they can be anything from leaving positive comments on a friend or colleague’s social media posts, volunteering within your community as well as thanking friends and family for iftar and suhoor, and then sharing it as an example to motivate others to do good.

According to a statement, last year between May 16, 2018, and June 14, 2018, the first and last days of Ramadan, there were over 15m feed posts about Ramadan on Instagram. “Our data shows that Ramadan is a time when people come to Instagram to share their moments of kindness and good deeds – with words associated with charity increasing significantly,” commented Samer Jamal, Instagram’s Strategic Partner Manager, MENA.

“Kindness does not have to be a grand gesture. In fact, small and unexpected acts can have a huge impact on someone’s day,” he added.

Coinciding with the campaign is the app’s first Ramadan camera filter through which Instagram encourages users to share their acts of kindness in a fun and creative way. Named “Lantern”, the filter features Arabesque designs, subtle bokeh and crescent moon shapes which can be switched to show Ramadan greetings in English and Arabic.
