Following a first-ever own goal in a World Cup final, a penalty kick, a surprising goalkeeping blunder, and even a pitch invasion from a Russian feminist protest group, France defeated Croatia 4-2 at Russia’s Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on Sunday, claiming the trophy in the nailbiting 2018 World Cup championship game. France, which was crowned the champion just 24 hours after Bastille Day, has won the World Cup once before, in 1998— the same year the team’s young superstar of Algerian and Cameroonian descent and the recipient of the tournament’s best young player award, Kylian Mbappe, was born. The victory also marks the third time that the French nation made it to the finals. The top prize was presented by Russian supermodel Natalia Vodianova, clad in a metallic gold dress that perfectly matched the shiny trophy.
