In case you needed a reason to love them even more, George and Amal Clooney have donated US $500,000 toward March For Our Lives, a gun control demonstration led by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students. The teenagers, who witnessed a devastating mass shooting last week at their school in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead, have planned the demonstration to take place in Washington, D.C. on March 24.
In a statement, George Clooney reveals that him and his wife will both be participating in the march. “Amal and I are so inspired by the courage and eloquence of these young men and women from Stoneman Douglas High School… Our family will be there on March 24 to stand side by side with this incredible generation of young people from all over the country, and in the name of our children Ella and Alexander, we’re donating $500,000 to help pay for this groundbreaking event. Our children’s lives depend on it,” he said.
On Tuesday afternoon, Oprah Winfrey matched the Clooney’s generous donation by also donating US $500,000 towards the event. March For Our Lives is organized by survivors of the Parkland high school shooting, Cameron Kasky, Emma Gonzalez, David Hogg, Alex Wind, and Jaclyn Corin, who Winfrey compares to the Freedom Riders of the 1960’s. “George and Amal, I couldn’t agree with you more. I am joining forces with you and will match your $500,000 donation to ‘March For Our Lives.’ These inspiring young people remind me of the Freedom Riders of the ’60s who also said we’ve had ENOUGH and our voices will be heard,” she wrote on Twitter.
Oprah isn’t the only high-powered figure to match the Clooneys’ donation of half-a-million dollars. Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg and his wife, Marilyn, also said that they would match the Clooneys’ charitable gesture.
