This morning, HM Queen Rania of Jordan shared a sweet message for children of determination (a term coined by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum last April) with her 4.6 million Instagram followers. The royal uploaded an image of herself leaning over and extending her hand to a baby sat on a woman’s lap that was taken during one of her frequent trips to disability centers dedicated to Jordan’s youth. “Children with disabilities, like all children, require plenty of love and care in order to grow into productive citizens. Special thanks to all those who care for Jordan’s youngest,” she wrote alongside the image.
The Kingdom of Jordan is internationally recognized for being a leader in the Arab World in promoting disability rights. In fact, in 2005, the Middle Eastern country received the Franklin Delano Roosevelt International Disability Award (named after the American president) for putting people of determination in the “forefront of its national agenda”. The award was presented to HM King Abdullah II of Jordan by the late US president’s granddaughter, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt. As a result of the members of Jordan’s royal family leveraging their roles to empower people with disabilities through programs that aim to integrate them back into society, job opportunities, and rights awareness, the country became the first Arab state to receive the award.
Additionally, Her Majesty is a dedicated advocate for children’s rights. Dubbed the “Queen of Hearts” for her long list of charitable endeavors, the royal is committed to creating a better future for the youth. And her efforts have not gone unnoticed. In 2007, she signed an agreement at the World Economic Forum in Davos christening her as UNICEF’s first ever Eminent Advocate for Children. More recently, she received the Humanitarian Award at the Fashion for Relief gala in Cannes in 2017 for her tireless campaigning towards helping children caught in conflict.
