HH Sheikh Mohammed Announces Sheikha Hind’s Initiative to Provide 5 Million Meals from Surplus Food

HH Sheikh Mohammed has announced an initiative launched by Sheikha Hind, that aims to provide five million meals from surplus food.

Following an education endowment fund in honor of mothers, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai has announced a new charitable initiative. The project is launched by Sheikh Hind bint Maktoum, wife of the Dubai ruler, and aims to provide five million meals for families in need through surplus food.

The initiative falls in line with the charitable spirit of the holy month of Ramadan, and will work with the UAE Food Bank to gather surplus food from 350 hotels across Dubai with the help of over 5,000 volunteers. “Today, Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum launched an initiative at the Emirates Food Bank that aims to provide 5 million meals from surplus food, in cooperation with 350 hotels and food establishments in Dubai, and with a work team of 5,000 volunteers,” wrote Sheikh Mohammed on X, formerly Twitter, adding, “Sheikha Hind is a role model in giving, my companion on the path of goodness, and a source of happiness for me, my family, and society.”

The UAE Food Bank was established in 2017 (the Year of Giving) by Sheikh Mohammed, and has since benefitted 35 million people according to the royal. Ne’ma, a national food loss and waste initiative estimates AED 6 billion ($1.63 billion) of food is wasted in the UAE annually, while the country has pledged to reduce food waste by 30% by 2027.

Ramadan has seen Sheikh Mohammed also issue a law introducing the Dubai Community Contributions Establishment. “According to the law, the new establishment has been designated as a non-profit private organization dedicated to promoting social solidarity, and enhancing social responsibility through philanthropy and giving.”
