In line with the UAE’s continued efforts to be more sustainable, HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, has launched a new initiative. Titled ‘Dubai Can’, it aims to lower the waste of single-use plastic bottles in the city.

More than 30 drinking water stations will be placed across Dubai to encourage residents and visitors to refill as opposed to purchasing new bottles. Alternatively, residents will also be encouraged to install water filters in their homes and places of work. All water stations across the city are set to provide the utmost standards of hygiene and maintain stringent adherence to municipal, federal and healthcare regulations.

The campaign forms part of the country’s strategic plan to make Dubai a leading sustainability destination in the world and the best city in the world to work, live and trip to. Additionally, the initiative also lines up with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the UAE NetZero 2050 initiative.

“The initiative seeks to encourage citizens, residents and visitors to be active players in building a more sustainable future, and to contribute in saving wildlife and the marine environment,” says His Excellency Helal Saeed Al Marri, Director General of Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism. “We hope Dubai Can will set in motion a new environmental movement across our city and the wider UAE, transforming the mindsets of people so that we can achieve positive change for a more sustainable future.”

This follows from the Executive Council of the Emirate of Dubai’s announcement to charge customers 25fils for every single-use plastic bag they use at checkout counters of every store.
