Azra Khamissa has been making waves with her contemporary take on the centuries-old tradition of henna application. Now, Dastaangoi Gallery in partnership with Bayt AlMamzar in Dubai brings a solo exhibition from the artist titled ‘Hand in Hand’.
Running from April 10 to 19, the exhibition has been curated by Amad Mian and will be showcasing a collection of photographs and artworks by Khamissa. The pieces on display invite the viewer to pause and take a moment to reflect on the tender relationship between life, time, and our humanity. Through the use of an ever-changing medium like henna, Khamissa wants to highlight stories that evolve with the passage of time.
For Khamissa, art has always been a form of meditation. Not only has the calming scent and sensation of henna helped her deal with a constantly distracted and racing mind over the years, it also made her feel connected to the UAE. As a Canadian-South African with Indian roots, the contemporary artist is the poster child for third-culture kids, having moved to Dubai at the age of 11. However, over time, it was henna that made her feel connected to the women of the region. After all, it is an element that is shared across several cultures during moments of celebration, be it Eid or weddings.
By dedicating her time to it, the chiropractor has been able to turn this deeply personal passion into something bigger as one of the pioneers of modernizing henna culture. Not only has Khamissa made henna more appealing to the younger generation, she has also received the attention of international brands such as Gucci, Fendi, and Bulgari. A recent collaboration with Adidas saw her minimalist designs adorning three different pairs of all-white sneakers. Take a closer look below.
