The leading lads and ladies of Hollywood are in a tizzy as the 2020 awards season officially kicks off today, January 5 with the Golden Globes promising an evening of honorable recognitions, star-studded tables, and envy-inducing fashion.
While A-listers put the finishing touches on their glamorous gowns and audacious ensembles before walking the red carpet at the legendary address of the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles later this evening, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) rounded out the final list of this year’s presenters on social media.
The 77th edition of the annual event welcomes a vast and varied group of the industry’s best on stage to present each awards category, including cinema titans Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Jennifer Aniston, Cate Blanchett, Charlize Theron, Scarlett Johansson, and Brad Pitt. Many presenters are returning to the grand stage after winning Golden Globes themselves, including Egyptian-American actor Rami Malek who took home the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture—Drama last year.
British comedian and four-time Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais is returning to the role for his fifth and supposedly final time after the 2019 show received the lowest audience viewership in three years.
Although the HFPA voting corp is around 90 international journalists in comparison to the Academy Awards’ 9,000 members, the Golden Globes is often a signal for the following shows’ front-runners. Many Hollywood semi-newcomers are already basking in the coveted spotlight after garnering nominations on December 9, such as Knives Out’s lead Ana de Armas, television star Jodie Comer, and Egyptian-American comedian Ramy Youssef.

American talk show host Ellen Degeneres is set to accept the distinguished Carol Burnett Award for her “outstanding contributions to the television medium on or off the screen” and eight-time Golden Globe winner Tom Hanks will be the honoree of the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his unrivaled impact on the film industry.
Even if the focus of the evening is largely on the exceptional talent seen throughout the year in cinema and television, many celebrities take a moment to use this highly-watched platform as a springboard to voice attention-worthy topics in the industry and the world overall. While 2018 witnessed the Time’s Up movement combatting sexual harassment and 2019 initiated discussions about gender inequality, 2020 may target climate change with the routine awards’ meal already being substituted with a plant-based vegan menu.
Nevertheless, stay tuned to see what issues Hollywood’s stars will tackle this year, whether it’s in their acceptance speeches, red carpet interviews, sartorial statements—or their dinner plate.
