Now that the world finally knows the name of Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik‘s daughter, many are still curious to know what it means. The Palestinian-American model recently opted to announce her baby’s name rather discreetly in a subtle manner. She did so by sprucing up her Instagram bio and writing her child’s name right under her name, “Khai’s mom.”

The name compliments their parents’ heritages (Malik’s father hails from Pakistan, and Hadid’s father hails from Palestine). In Arabic, the name Khai translates to “crowned.” While the couple hasn’t explicitly explained why they chose the name Khai, a TMZ source suggests that the name was not only selected for its Arabic meaning but also due to the deep family sentiment attached to it.

The name Khai is reportedly a tribute to the model’s late paternal grandmother, who was named Khairia Daher Hadid. Hadid is known to have shared a close bond with her grandmother, who passed away in 2008. The name Khai also pays tribute to Hadid’s sister Bella whose full name is Isabella Khair Hadid, likely also in homage to their grandmother.
Hadid welcomed her firstborn child with boyfriend Malik in September 2020. The new mother has been sharing her experience with pregnancy in the form of throwback posts and pictures while still protecting her baby’s privacy by not revealing her face to the public. In a birthday post to Malik, Hadid thanked her boyfriend for making her “a mamma to the best girl ever.”

Malik too gushed about his daughter’s influence on his life in an Instagram post announcing her birth. “Our baby girl is here, healthy and beautiful,” he wrote. “To try put into words how i am feeling right now would be an impossible task. The love I feel for this tiny human is beyond my understanding. Grateful to know her, proud to call her mine, and thankful for the life we will have together x.”
