The six main cast members of Friends, along with show creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman, are said to be in talks for a potential unscripted reunion special to air on HBO Max, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
“The cast of Friends have discussed bringing the show back in some capacity, but in what form is still very much up for discussion,” an unnamed source told Entertainment Tonight.
This news comes as a bit of a surprise, given that almost everyone involved with the show has vigorously denied the possibility of a Friends reunion for years. Just last month, Jennifer Aniston raised speculation when she posted a selfie of the cast on Instagram, but everyone from Lisa Kudrow to Kauffman has ruled out the possibility of a reunion in the past.
However, Aniston appeared to reverse course in June when she admitted to Ellen DeGeneres that the Friends cast was working on something together, adding about the possibility of a reunion: “I would do it. The girls would do it, and the boys would do it, I’m sure. Listen, anything can happen.”
“The talks are still early stages, but everyone is on board in some capacity if it makes sense,” said Entertainment Tonight’s source, leaving us to wonder just how high the probability is that we’ll actually get to see Ross, Rachel, Phoebe, Monica, Chandler, and Joey reunited onscreen.
Sure, the cast are all friends IRL, but that doesn’t answer our lingering questions about Monica and Chandler’s kids, Phoebe’s marriage to Mike, Ross and Rachel’s long-awaited romance, or, well, whatever happened to poor single Joey. Hopefully, we won’t have long to wait before finding out.
