Egypt’s World Cup Qualifier Takes Twitter By Storm

On Sunday night at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria, Egyptian soccer player Mohamed Saleh – who plays for European club Liverpool – scored a triumphant 94th-minute penalty for the Egyptian national team against Congo, leading his team to a 2-1 win and securing the North African country’s spot at the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia. The victory marks the first time in 27 years that Egypt has qualified for one of the biggest sporting events in the world (the last time they made the Fifa World Cup was in 1990), so naturally, fans had a meltdown.

Celebrations took to the streets of Cairo, where an army helicopter dropped hundreds of Egyptian flags on the thousands of fans gathered at Tahrir Square. Of course, the merriment was not merely limited to the Egyptian streets – the Burj Khalifa in Dubai lit up in the colors of the Egyptian flag to show support.

As is the case with most historic events, the internet erupted with hilarious and witty tweets and memes from Egyptian football supporters. Check out some of the best reactions from Twitter below.
