Edward Enninful, the First Black Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue Releases His Debut Memoir: A Visible Man

Edward Enninful

A beautiful introspection into the life of British Vogue’s first Black Editor-in-Chief, Edward Enninful’s debut memoir, A Visible Man, is now available to the public.

This extraordinary book takes its readers through the life journey of Enninful, from his childhood bedroom in Ghana to the editorial chair of British Vogue. Born in the Ghanaian city of Takoradi, Enninful relocated to London at the threshold of his teenage years with his parents and five siblings. Taking inspiration from his mother, a seamstress who ran a successful dress-making business, with her unique ability to customize and pair Western and West-African fabrics, Enninful went on to become one of the most sought-after names in the fashion industry.

A Visible Man

The memoir marks the first time Enninful shares his story with the world through a series of emotional chapters that grapple the reader in every sense. A Visible Man beautifully narrates the saga of a husband, son, brother, friend, and above all, an icon. The book showcases a varied compass of emotions and life experiences, ranging from failures, loss, coming out and joy to hedonism, fame, love, heartbreak, sacrifice, ill health, and an era of defining achievements.

Enninful took the reins to the position of fashion director at i-D magazine at the age of 18, which made him the youngest ever fashion director for an international publication. Known for his distinct style paired with edgy elegance, he quickly rose to fame and went on to flawlessly style models for famous shows and covers. Soon, he began contributing to Italian Vogue, and being a renowned flag-bearer of diverse voices, Enninful orchestrated ‘The Black Issue’ which only featured Black models. Later, he rose to become the fashion and style director of W Magazine and in 2017, Enninful became the editor-in-chief of British Vogue, making him the only Black person to serve in this role in the history of Vogue.
