Since I first moved to the Gulf, I’ve been witnessing a change in the region’s decorative style. I remember visiting the first private homes and being amazed by an aesthetic that was so far from mine. We are in a region that loves grandeur, and this naturally is reflected in how living spaces are designed. But there’s one thing that’s important to mention. Although there’s a flair for classic style furniture, marble, and rooms of very generous proportions, there is also a sense of warmth and hospitality. Carpets give a cozy touch, fabrics are always rich, and majlis are an invitation for long hours of endless discussions. The perfect example is the London residence of HE Sheikh Mohamed bin Fahed Al Thani – one of the covers of this issue – masterfully decorated by Timothy Corrigan. I have to thank Sheikh Al Thani for entrusting us with the responsibility and honor of showcasing this wonderful haven.
Today, as you can see in the second home we photograph for our cover, minimalism is rising, especially among the young generations. Although, personally, I’m into more elaborate spaces, I can’t help but admire the peaceful mood that emanates from this all-white residence in Abu Dhabi. The flair for extreme interiors inspired us to build the issue focusing on these two ways of living that are currently dominating our interiors. The message is clear: go very extra, or very minimal, but nothing seems to be allowed in the middle.
This edition is bursting with other stories that I fell in love with. On page 68, we give you a special tour of the private homes of Yves Saint Laurent. I had the opportunity to visit one of his properties during my last stay in Marrakech, and I have to say that it is absolutely everything you could dream of. It is so impressive to see the fabulous display of art, but nestled in a house that celebrates Moroccan crafts, built by the top specialists and craftsmen that came from all over the country to work on this project. Not to mention the stunning colors of the garden that surrounds it, with a big waterlily lake and as many species of cactus as imaginable.
If you are planning to renovate your bathroom, this month, we bring you the latest trends, and we explain why this part of the house is getting more and more love. I don’t want to reveal too much, as you will find all the detailed information on page 34. The only tip I can share for now is that you can go for any marble, as long as it is green.
