When was Earth Day established?

The concept of Earth Day first came about in 1969 during a UNESCO conference in San Francisco, where activist John McConnell proposed a special day to honor the planet, as well as the concept of peace overall.

Initially, Earth Day was meant to be celebrated on March 21 — the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. However, the final date was set to April 22, 1970 by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson, making Earth Day 2024 the 54th edition of the annual occasion. Today, Earth Day is coordinated globally by (formerly known as the Earth Day Network) and is marked by a series of events that take place all over the planet.

“Earth Day is a reminder of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability, encouraging us to come together and take action for a healthier planet and brighter future,” reads the official website. “Through various events, toolkits, and initiatives, we aim to raise awareness, inspire change, and foster a deeper connection with nature. Let’s unite in our efforts to protect the Earth today and for generations to come. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and create a more sustainable world.”

What is the theme of Earth Day 2024?

This year, the theme of Earth Day is “Planet vs Plastics”, and has been chosen with the aim of reducing global plastic production by 60% by 2040. Back in November 2023, released a report titled Babies vs Plastics to help educate readers about the effects of our plastic consumption, especially on the future generation.

Acknowledged by 193 countries, the annual event brings together more than a billion people each year with its worldwide activities and experiences. This year, all are encouraged to sign the Global Plastic Treaty Petition, as well as donate to the cause.
