Michelin has revealed the 2022 selection of the Michelin Guide Dubai, which is the first ever edition in the UAE and celebrates Dubai’s vibrant and dynamic culinary journey. A total of 69 restaurants, which cover 21 cuisine types, have been selected and recommended unanimously by the Michelin Guide inspectors. The Michelin Guide Dubai 2022 recognizes two Two Michelin star restaurants, nine One Michelin Star restaurants and 14 Bib Gourmand restaurants, in its debut inaugural edition.
Two restaurants were awarded two Michelin Stars
II Ristorante –Niko Romito received two Michelin Stars for its contemporary Italian fare balanced between purity and clarity. The menu features top-quality ingredients with highlights including fish and pasta dishes. Also receiving two Michelin Stars was Stay by Allèno which impresses its guests with a less-is-more approach, resulting in sophisticated dishes that are artistically prepared with French cooking as its base.
Nine restaurants were awarded one Michelin Star
Displaying the sheer brilliance, creativity, and talent of Dubai’s culinary landscape, nine restaurants that serve cuisines ranging from Portuguese to Indian, Japanese and Chinese received the One Michelin Star award.
11 woodfire, owned by Chef Akmal Anuar, who is of Malay origin, received the award for offering its diners a variety of vegetables, seafood, and meats grilled to perfection. Directed by Saverio Sbaragli, who honed his craft at three Michelin-Starred Arpège, Al Muntaha is the second restaurant to take home the award. The restaurant sits atop the architectural masterwork of Burj Al Arab and offers a sophisticated and refined French cuisine with Mediterranean influences, while the third recipient, Armani Ristorante presents precise, modern Italian cooking at the Burj Khalifa, where carefully crafted dishes are met with unparalleled service.
Hakkasan, the Dubai outpost of the London-based restaurant located at the Atlantis bagged the award this year for offering reimagined Chinese dishes that are exclusive to the city, including the lychee lobster with yuzu pearl, while an Omakase restaurant, Hoseki, helmed by a sixth generation sushi master received the award for offering its diners a bespoke Omakase experience using finely sourced, fresh ingredients all the way from Japan.
The sixth restaurant that received the One Michelin Star award is Ossiano. Located in the basement of Atlantis, The Palm, the underwater restaurant is a universe of creative fare, and its Metanoia menu gains inspiration from Chef Gregoire Berger’s childhood memories, featuring dishes that come with fine texture contrasts and impressive clarity of flavor.
The final three One Michelin Star restaurants are Tasca by Jose Avillèz, serving Portuguese dishes that are vibrant and innovative; Torno Subito, which is owned by internationally acclaimed Chef Massimo Bottura, offering Italian dishes and desserts and lastly, Trèsind Studio, which offers an authentic multi-course tasting menu featuring herbs and flowers grown on its rooftop terrace setting.
Fourteen restaurants were awarded a Bib Gourmand
The 2022 edition of the Michelin Guide Dubai also awarded 14 restaurants with the Bib Gourmand for offering value-for-money gourmet experience for a reasonable price. These are: Al Khayma, Bait Maryam, Brasserie Boulud, Fi’Lia, Folly, Goldfish, Ibn Albahr, Indya by Vineet, Kinoya, Ninive, Orfali Bros, Reif Japanese Kushiyaki, Shabestan, and Teible.
Michelin Green Star award for sustainable gastronomy
Lowe, a Michelin-recommended restaurant by culinary duo Kate Christou and Jesse Blake, received a Michelin Green Star award for its exceptional efforts and remarkable commitment to sustainability. The restaurant procures its ingredients as locally as possible and directs effort towards zero food waste while cooking food on fire and practicing nose-to-tail cooking.
Michelin Special Awards
While the Michelin Guide inspectors dine and observe restaurants and their culinary prowess, they also have an eye on service professionals to unearth talents who are deserving of the Michelin Awards. This year saw three awards being presented in the city. Syrian-French chef Solemann Haddad of Moonrise took home the Young Chef Award, while the Sommelier Award was presented to Danijela Tesic of Ossiano for her passion and enthusiasm for the culinary craft. Lastly, The Welcome and Service Award was presented to the Bait Maryam team for their warmth and hospitality.
