Over the years, Dubai has established itself as a cultural and economic hub not only in the region, but also on the international stage. As the city continues to prosper and attract individuals and events from around the world, there is no debate about its status as a cosmopolitan haven. Now, Dubai proves this once again by securing a bid to host the World Cities Culture Summit (WCCS) in 2024.

Taking place in 2024 from October 29 to November 1, the event will mark the first time the summit is being hosted in the Middle East and North Africa region. Founded in 2012 by the Mayor of London, WCCS is a coalition of global cities who share a belief in the importance of culture. The platform provides a way for policymakers in key cities to share research and intelligence, and explore the vital role of culture and sustainable urban development in their future prosperity.

While the summit began with eight cities, its membership has now grown to include 40 global cities across six continents. Dubai became a member in 2022, the same year that the 40+ cities met in Helsinki for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic. The only other Arab city in the network is Abu Dhabi, cementing the United Arab Emirates as a leader within the region. The three-day affair in 2024 will be operating under the objective ‘to explore the role of culture in the prosperity of cities and establish the foundations for sustainable development’.

Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture and member of the Dubai Council stated, “Hosting the 2024 World Cities Culture Summit is a testament to the visionary aspirations of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to transform Dubai into a global center for culture, an incubator for creativity and a thriving hub for talent.”
