Downton Abbey fans, there’s some exciting news coming your way. According to reports, fans of the franchise can dive into the Downton experience and spend time in the villa that will soon feature in Downton Abbey: A New Era.
So far, the Crawley family has been seen residing in Highclere Castle in Hampshire. However, the upcoming movie will take place primarily in the French Riviera, telling the story of a villa in the South of France, which, according to the plot line, has been handed over to the Dowager Countess by a man she once knew. If you’ve watched the trailer, you may already know this—“Do I look as if I would turn down a villa in the south of France?” Maggie Smith says in the sneak peek.
Designed back in the 19th century by Danish architect Hans-Georg Tersling, Villa Rocabella (called Villa of the Doves in the movie) was first created in the Belle Époque style, and is located an hour away from St Tropez. Once a literary salon, the sprawling property was converted into a holiday home post World War IIand come 2000, underwent another transformation by architect Patrice Nourissat.
Playing the backdrop for the soon-to-release film, Villa Rocabella includes three separate houses, and lush green grounds. Able to accommodate up to 42 residents, the space comes with its own petanque court, gym, jacuzzi and swimming pool, along with regal reception rooms. Should you wish to stay at the mansion, you’ll also be pampered with your own butler, housekeeper and chef, and a barman. The interiors include a lavish staircase, creamy coral walls, and of course, a gorgeous view of the Meditteranean sea. If it looks slightly familiar to you, it’s because this home has also featured in films like A Perfect Man (2015), The Summer House (2019) and The Man Who Sold His Skin (2020).
