Beyoncé took to Instagram to wish her former bandmate and childhood friend Kelly Rowland a happy birthday by way of a series of epic throwback pictures of the pair together. “Happy Birthday Kelly! I love you Deep Deep,” she captioned the images, also referencing a song from the 1985 film The Color Purple. “BIG deep. Me and you, us never part, Makidada. Walking through them middle school hallways like ‘Rollin Rollin Rollin’,” she wrote.
Sharing the images with her 123 million followers, the first snap featured a grainy, black and white portrait of grinning, young Rowland donning a graduation cap and clutching what appears to be a diploma. The next image features a polaroid scan of the duo when they were a little older, enjoying a pile of chicken wings, while the following snap sees the friends twinning in matching berets. The last snap in the series of throwbacks shows Beyoncé giving the newly-minted 37-year-old a piggyback, both of them grinning from ear-to-ear.
Indeed, Beyoncé and Rowland go way back. The duo were childhood friends before forming one of the most successful girl groups of all time, Destiny’s Child, alongside Michelle Williams. Together, they would give us Say My Name, Survivor, and Bootylicious, sell millions of records, tour the world together, and perform in front of sold-out crowds.
Like most of us, the superstar singer can’t seem to resist posting a good throwback on the ‘Gram, especially when it comes to birthdays. Last month, the multi Grammy award-winning singer took to the social media platform to celebrate Oprah Winfrey’s 69th birthday, sharing an adorable photo of Winfrey as a young girl. And just a week before that, she did the same with former First Lady Michelle Obama, posting a photo of a toddler Obama staring down the camera, with a pink text that read “Bow Down” across the image.
But this is one of the few instances where Beyoncé showed the world pictures of her younger self and it begs the question, did Queen B clearly skip the awkward teenage phase?
