Following a marathon six-week circuit spanning the Venice Biennale, documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel, and Skulpture Projekte Münster in Münster, the art world’s denizens are drawn in for Art Basel, the Swiss fair whose 48th edition opened its doors today. Regarded as the “Olympics of art,” this year’s annual fair brings together sculptures, paintings, and installations from 291 leading galleries from more than 30 countries, including newcomer Egypt, one of a number of first-time exhibitors. Works by esteemed Arab artists including Palestinian video and installation artist Mona Hatoum, Egyptian photographer and filmmaker Maha Maamoun, and Saudi modern artist Maha Malluh will also be on display.
