With the Golden Globes 2020 behind us and the Critics Choice Awards 2020 coming up on 12 January, awards season is well and truly underway. Now, the long-awaited BAFTA nominations have arrived. Always the biggest night of the year for British film, the awards honour the greatest talent shaping cinema now – and is attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge thanks to the Duke’s role as the president of BAFTA. Read on for everything you need to know about the BAFTAs 2020.
Who are the nominees for the BAFTAs 2020?
Sex Education’s Asa Butterfield and Charlie’s Angels’s Ella Balinksa announced the nominations for this year’s BAFTA awards on 7 January, sparking heated debate about the lack of diversity among the nominees – with members of the BAFTA committee speaking out about their frustration over the results of this year’s vote. “Infuriating lack of diversity in the acting noms,” chairman Marc Samuelson told Variety. “It’s just a frustration that the industry is not moving as fast as certainly the whole BAFTA team would like it to be.”
Joker is tipped for glory, with 11 nominations, including Best Film, Best Leading Actor for Joaquin Phoenix, and Best Director for Todd Phillips. Meanwhile, The Irishman and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood earned 10 nods each, with 1917 just behind with nine. Greta Gerwig’s Little Women was once again shut out of the major categories, with husband Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story up for Best Original Screenplay and Best Casting.
The talent in the powerhouse couple’s brilliant films, however, may well scoop the biggest awards of the night. Scarlett Johansson and Saoirse Ronan are both up for Lead Actress, while Laura Dern and Florence Pugh will go head to head for Best Supporting Actress. Also of note? Margot Robbie’s double nominations in the Best Supporting Actress category for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Bombshell. See below for the full list of nominees.
