Royal photographer Anwar Hussein, who captured many of Princess Diana’s iconic images has died at age 85.
The news of Anwar Hussein’s passing was confirmed by the accredited royal photographer’s family via a statement to People. “Our family is completely heartbroken as we come to terms with Anwar’s passing,” the family shared. “We are however grateful that he lived a full and amazing life, always on his own terms. His photographic career took him beyond his wildest dreams, from his early days growing up in Tanzania to capturing the world of royalty, rock, and cinema,” the statement continued. “We are all so proud of his incredible body of iconic work. We take great comfort in the knowledge that his images will be enjoyed by generations to come.”
According to The Times, Hussein died of cancer on September 23. He is survived by his wife Caroline and their two sons, Zak and Samir, who also followed the same career path as photographers. While Anwar lensed some of Princess Diana‘s most memorable photos, Samir was behind the viral photo of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle entering the 2020 Endeavour Fund Awards holding an umbrella under the rain.
Hussein’s access allowed him to travel around the world, documenting royal tours, such as Princess Diana’s solo visit to Egypt in May 1992. “The day before she was to visit the Great Pyramids of Giza, she confided to me that she didn’t feel comfortable posing alone and would far prefer being photographed doing something,” he previously told Vogue. “I suggested she should imagine herself as a famous model or dancer. She told me she would feel a bit silly doing that: ‘I don’t like posing, but I will try it really quickly and once only, and you can grab the picture,’ she said. The next day, Diana appeared at the Pyramids. She was wearing a tan-colored outfit by Catherine Walker, which disappointed some of the photographers because it didn’t stand out from the desert scenery. She walked somewhat awkwardly towards the cameras with her arms crossed. I waited for the moment. Suddenly she tilted her foot up and smiled. This was it! ‘Did you get it?’ she asked later. ‘I did,’ I said, and was rewarded with her wonderful smile.”
