The audience of the musical comedy was treated to a special scene starring Anne Hathaway and Anna Wintour, who made cameos as producers of Gutenberg. The Academy Award-winning actor and Vogue editor-in-chief took the stage to hand the musical’s protagonists Bud (Josh Gad) and Doug (Andrew Rannells) their Broadway contract before the show came to a close at the James Earl Jones Theater in New York City.

What’s more, the duo’s cameo also nodded to the hit 2006 film Devil Wears Prada, in which Hathaway plays Andie Sachs, second assistant to Meryl Streep‘s Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of a fashion magazine. At the time of the film’s release, it was reported that Streep’s character was inspired by Wintour, which made their recent joint appearance all the more remarkable. “I’m a very famous Broadway producer, and this is my assistant,” Wintour says gesturing to Hathaway as part of their cameo in the musical. “Still?” a disbelieving Hathaway asks in return before the scene continues.

Hathaway was dressed in an oversized black blazer and trousers while Wintour wore a black ensemble with stiletto heels, and both opted for yellow ‘Producers’ trucker hats which is a signature element of the musical. A video of the scene shared by Gutenberg’s Instagram account has quickly gone viral. “Are you wearing the— The #GutenbergBway yellow trucker hat? Yeah. I am,” reads the caption, referencing a popular scene from Devil Wears Prada. Hathaway and Wintour previously made headlines when they were seated next to each other on the front row of the Michael Kors Spring/Summer 2023 show in September.

Written and composed by Scott Brown and Anthony King, Gutenberg officially opened on October 12, and tells the story of two best friends Bud and Doug, who aim to put on a Broadway show together.
