What were the biggest snubs and surprises from the BAFTAs 2024 nominations?
Lily Gladstone, who currently seems poised to win the Best Actress Oscar, missed out on a nomination. Meanwhile, in the Best Actor category, All of Us Strangers’s Andrew Scott was snubbed, even though both Paul Mescal and Claire Foy were recognized for their supporting performances (and no Jamie Bell, despite him getting a much bigger showcase in the film than Foy). The divisive Saltburn overperformed: Rosamund Pike got a nod, as expected, but so did Barry Keoghan in lead, and Jacob Elordi in supporting. Elsewhere, it was wonderful to see Past Lives’s so-far-unfairly-overlooked Teo Yoo in Best Actor, as it was to see Sandra Hüller nominated for both Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest. The other head scratchers? Greta Gerwig, Celine Song, Yorgos Lanthimos and Martin Scorsese missing out on Best Director nominations; May December, easily one of the best written films of the year, missing out on a screenplay nomination; Mark Ruffalo, a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee, going unrecognized; and Barbie being snubbed for Best Makeup and Hair.
