Makeup Artist Sofia Tilbury Reveals How to Get That Zuhair Murad Couture Glow

Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad showed his romantic Spring/Summer 2022 couture collection in Paris yesterday, with a glowing beauty look dreamed up by celebrity makeup artist, Sofia Tilbury. The Charlotte Tilbury artist and ambassador shared with Vogue Arabia her inspiration for the looks, her backstage beauty secrets, and how she first met Murad.

What was the brief for this show? Talk us through the look and products used

Zuhair’s Spring/Summer ’22 couture show was made up of beautiful, jeweled fabrics, rich colors and romantic silhouettes, so for the makeup, we wanted to complement the elegance and detail of the pieces whilst capturing the rebellious spirit of adventure within the collection.

Zuhair and I wanted the models’ skin to be quite pure, fresh and natural, so we used Charlotte Tilbury’s new Beautiful Skin Foundation to create a healthy-looking, dewy glow, with a light, cream bronze inspired by desert islands. I used the Hollywood Contour Wands on the cheekbones and temples to add warmth to the skin, and we also blended it across the bridge of the nose to create that sun-kissed effect. Zuhair loves the drama of a smoky eye, so we used neutral-toned matte and chocolate bronze eyeshadows to define the eyes and create a beautiful, diffused effect, with a sheer, metallic pop on the lids.

To finish, the brows were brushed-up and feathered for a full, fluffy, natural look, and we pressed on a sheer nude lip for a touch of romance and femininity using Charlotte’s lipstick shades in Pillow Talk Intense, Coverstar or Kim K.W. depending on each model’s complexion.

How does the beauty look work with the couture pieces?

The key with this look was to help bring Zuhair’s incredible vision to life whilst still allowing the beautiful couture to speak for itself. The fresh, glowing skin and fluffy, full brows create a natural-looking canvas, whilst the diffused, bronzed smoky eye adds sultry romance to complement the collection. I know how much Arabian women adore a smoky eye, and I think these fresh, flawless textures are going to be ideal for the transition into spring!

I was completely obsessed with the elegance of Zuhair’s couture collection. Every piece looked like it was dripping in treasure, so we chose to use Charlotte’s Super Nudes Easy Eye palette to create a soft, diffused smokey eye base, adding a pop of sheer metallic on the center of the lids with Eyes to Mesmerize in Chocolate Bronze. We also added a touch of gold highlight on the lids and inner corners to play with the light in a similar way to the highly bejeweled fabric of the dresses.

What was your experience working with Zuhair Murad?

I was so thrilled to finally meet Zuhair, having created the makeup look for his Fall-Winter 2021 couture collection remotely last year. We visited his atelier the day before the show, and I was so inspired by his energy and vision. All of my friends in the Middle East had told me how warm and passionate he is, and when I met him, he was instantly so welcoming and kind. He is incredibly passionate about his craft and his attention to detail is inspirational! He truly knows how to use his artistry to make women look and feel beautiful and empowered. It is such an honor to work with him.

How do you get models looking their best backstage?

Backstage, we always spend a lot of time prepping the models’ skin with skincare, from the calming, de-puffing Cryo-Recovery Face Mask to the super hydrating Magic Serum Crystal Elixir and of course, Charlotte’s iconic Magic Cream – the backstage skin savior that supermodels and celebrities around the world can’t live without!
