Summer Hair Without A Care

Artistic Director for Marquee and all out hair aficionado, Catherine Hawkes looks after some of the most important locks in the Middle East. Between bouncy blow outs and stylish cuts, she has also been acknowledged as the ‘Middle East Colorist of the Year 2017,’ proving she really does know a thing or two about women’s needs and wants in the region. With the humidity rising and the sun scorching down, Hawkes shares her wisdom on how to make the most of summer hair for the long months ahead.

How does the summer affect hair? Summer is always symbolized as a carefree time of year, yet it is one of the most testing times for your hair. With Summer comes the dreaded humidity, and living in the UAE this can sometimes reach over 80% – every bouncy blow-dries worst nightmare! Either you hair is going to frizz up the second you step outside, or it’s going to become as flat as a pancake.

Can dehydration damage your hair? Dehydrated hair is a huge issue when it comes to the summer. If your hair has a lack of moisture, it’s going to make you hair strands extremely brittle and a lot less flexible, causing breakage. If you on top of this use a straightener or hair curlers, which give off a lot of heat or have a color service this could severely damage your hair.

What will too much sun exposure do? We all love the sun but it is very important to protect your hair when you’re out tanning. Too much sun exposure can dry out the hair, causing dehydration and also can really fade colored hair. This can lead to brassy looking hair especially through the top section, giving an unwanted mop look.

How can you resolve this? Ideally you don’t want to be looking at resolving this, you want to prevent this. You should always use products with protection in them; like you would apply sunscreen on your skin you should apply a product through your hair too. I always tell clients that after washing their hair they should put a pre-styling product through it that also has a sun protection, getting into this habit will only result in benefits.

What are some easy hairstyles for summer? Of course, braids are always a favorite and they are great in the summer for when you’re tackling humidity. We always have people telling us they find braids hard to do on their own, hair so at Marquee we have started a braid school that is open for everyone. It’s a great way to beat the heat and have a fun afternoon with your girlfriends. We are also loving the knotted look, it’s like a braid but much easier to do – you take two pieces of hair and tie in a knot then connect this to the next section and tie in another know. It’s an easy and seriously cool look for the summer. Finally, if you’re looking for something even easier, I would suggest doing a topknot. Keep it high on your head as if it’s low it can look like you’ve just shoved up your hair, making it look a bit dated. I would also suggest not doing it too tight and perfect as this will give off that summer boho vibe.

What are your top three essential products for hair over the summer? My favorite product to keep hair moisturized is the ‘Argan Moisturizing Elixir’ by Balmain; it’s got 100% silk protein and is great on any hair type. For hair on the go I highly recommend ‘Hair Resort Spray’ by Kevin Murphy, it is a texturizer spray with lots of UV protection. All you have to do is spray it into wet hair, give it a scrunch and then head out. Your hair will dry naturally with that perfect messy beach look everyone loves during the summer. Finally, Olaplex No. 3 is a strengthening treatment for colored hair that I cannot recommend enough. I think everyone should implement this into their hair routine once a week as the results are out of this world, leaving your hair feeling soft and looking beautiful and glossy.
